If your Magento store feels sluggish on a phone, the theme is very often the culprit. And the best-known fix for that just got a whole lot easier to say yes to.
In short: Hyvä is a lightweight front end for Magento 2 that swaps the heavy default theme’s JavaScript for a much leaner setup, so pages load and respond faster. Since 10 November 2025 the Hyvä Theme itself has been open source and available at no licence cost. Its Checkout, Enterprise and Commerce products stay commercial.
What is the Hyvä Magento theme?
A theme is the part of your store your customers actually see: the layout, styling and the bits that make buttons, menus and mini-baskets work. Magento 2 ships with a default theme called Luma, and most older stores are built on it.
Hyvä is a different starting point. It’s built on Tailwind CSS (a tidy way of styling pages) and Alpine.js (a small JavaScript library for interactive bits). It throws out the heavy tooling Luma depends on and starts lean.
Why is Hyvä so much faster than Luma?
Luma loads a stack of older JavaScript libraries, including RequireJS, Knockout and jQuery, on nearly every page. Your customer’s phone has to download, read and run all of that before the page feels ready.
Hyvä ditches most of that. Less code means less to download and less work for the browser, so pages appear faster and react to taps sooner.
The fastest JavaScript is the JavaScript you never send to the customer’s phone.
That matters for Google’s Core Web Vitals, which measure how quickly the main content appears (LCP), how fast the page responds to a tap (INP) and how much it jumps about while loading (CLS). Hyvä helps on all three, especially the first two.
Is the Hyvä Magento theme really open source now?
Yes, the theme is. On 6 November 2025, Hyvä announced it was relicensing the Hyvä Theme under the OSL 3.0 and AFL 3.0 open-source licences, the same family of licences Magento Open Source uses.
From 10 November 2025, the theme became available on GitHub and through Composer (the tool developers use to install Magento packages), with access keys from the Hyvä portal at no charge.
What’s still a paid product?
Hyvä’s other products, namely Hyvä Checkout, Hyvä Enterprise and Hyvä Commerce, remain under their commercial licence. Hyvä UI, a library of ready-made components, is now sold separately too.
So the theme is open to everyone, while the extras are still optional add-ons.
Why does the licence change matter?
Open-source licensing means the code is out in the open on GitHub. Developers can read it, fix it and contribute back, and store owners aren’t tied to a single licence holder to keep using it. That’s the same footing Magento Open Source itself sits on.
It should also mean more extension vendors building Hyvä support, because far more stores can now use it. Hyvä’s own business review reported around 1,800 domains registering for the open-source theme in the first eight weeks.
What does this mean for Magento store owners?
For a long time, the licence was one more line on the “should we switch?” list. That’s gone for the theme itself. Now the decision is mainly about the work involved.
- New builds: Hyvä is a natural starting point for a fresh Magento 2 store.
- Existing Luma stores: moving to Hyvä is a front-end rebuild, not a quick toggle. Your products, customers and orders stay put, but the templates are redone.
- Extensions: any third-party module that shows things on the front end needs a Hyvä-compatible version. Many popular ones have them, but it’s worth checking each.
Is switching to Hyvä worth it for my store?
For most Luma stores with real mobile traffic, it’s well worth a serious look. A faster store is nicer to use, and that tends to help both sales and search visibility.
It’s also a sensible moment to tidy up. A front-end rebuild is a natural time to drop extensions you no longer use, simplify clunky page layouts and fix the little annoyances customers have been putting up with.
That said, speed isn’t only about the theme. Heavy images, slow hosting and too many extensions will still drag things down. Hyvä gives you a lean base. The rest still needs doing properly.
Questions to ask before you switch
- Which extensions do we use, and do they all have Hyvä support?
- Is our checkout customised, and do we want Hyvä Checkout or to keep the default one?
- Is our hosting up to scratch, so we’re not fixing one bottleneck and leaving another?
- Is now a good time to refresh the design while we’re rebuilding the front end anyway?
- What are our Core Web Vitals now, so we can measure the difference afterwards?
How does a Hyvä rebuild actually work?
We build direct and tweak together. That means we get a working Hyvä version of your store up on a staging site (a private copy that customers can’t see), then refine it with you until it’s right.
We check every extension, test the checkout end to end, and compare speed before and after. Then we launch at a quiet time and keep an eye on it.
Our Magento development team handles builds and rebuilds, and our Magento hosting on NGINX and PHP-FPM makes sure the server isn’t the thing slowing you down.
